INTERVIEW: From Major To Indie, From Pop To Rap, Diego Gomes Is Reppin’ The New Generation

Diego Gomes is a go getter and it started at an early age. He’s been making music before everyone became an artist and signed to a major label since his early teens. Canadian Dope had the change to chop it up with Diego Gomes to see how things are different since departing from his major label deal. Fresh off his recent hit “Understand Me,” Diego Gomes is grinding harder than ever and wants the fans to know what he’s been up up. He’s making serious noise in the music scene and has a large following on social media and YouTube. Check out “Understand Me” below.

For those who don’t know, tell us about yourself and where you’re from?

I’m from Canada, I grew up in a Portuguese/Italian home in a hood on the west end of Toronto. I was always into music but I found myself doing urban rap music around 4 years ago. Before that I was doing pop which is where I learned how to play and make music; but my sound was always under scrutiny and I did not have the freedom to say what I wanted. It took me some time to get out of my management and major label situation but now I’m finally in a position where I can put out what I want!

What movement are you representing?

I don’t really like the word movement it’s so played out but I do represent the new generation. I’m an underdog so I represent everyone who has challenges in life. Don’t let anyone say you can’t do it, whether it’s a rapper, doctor, stripper or whatever; just turn up and go hard!

You started your career very early, how did you get into the business?

When I was 8 years old I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life so I just did it. I started a band at the age of 10 and when I was 13 I tried out for The Next Star and won. That lead me to so many huge opportunities and gave me the chance to learn from the best. After that I linked up with Play De Record and did some stuff with them. I met my manager, slowly built a team and spent countless of hours in studio. I might make it look easy but it was rough, you just have to live this shit. A fish doesn’t complain about water even though it holds you back.

Who are your main influences when it comes to music or life in general?

My main influences would be G-Eazy, Ramriddlz, Geko, Casper, Motley Crue, Diplo, OVO, Michael Jackson, Metro Booming, Future… man the list could go on and on.

What are your biggest accomplishments to date?

For sure winning The Next Star, performing at the Rogers Centre, playing shows and writing songs with my past idols like Shawn Desman, Neverest etc.

Who are you officially signed to right now?

I am currently signed to my fams Studizzy management. At the same time, we are open to offers from labels but we ain’t waiting around for anybody. Studizzy lets me move like a label.

What are your next steps? What projects do you have coming out?

This year is a full reboot, I’m dropping new music at least every month. Plus, I have some surprises up my sleeve. This year is going to be one of the best years for me as an artist. This is so much bigger than props or fame. This is about freedom, the freedom to be me! So stay tuned.

Any final words or shout outs?

My fam and team mates at Studizzy, Shakill  (watch out for him). Shout out to the #SauceGang which is everyone who rocks with me, understands me, supports me. And thanks to you Canadian Dope!
